Local acquiring editor, Deidra Purvis, will discuss the acquisitions process and how manuscripts are read through the eyes of an acquiring editor. She’ll share tips for finding the right agent and/or editor for your children’s book, the qualities she looks for when reading submissions, what stands out and what doesn’t, and what happens when an editor decides to move your submission forward. Bring any questions you have about publishing!

Deidra Purvis is passionate about picture books! She is the acquisitions editor for Free Spirit Publishing, the leading publisher of books to support young people’s social-emotional learning and well-being. She acquires new board books, picture books, and nonfiction books for children and teens. In her previous roles, Deidra was a children’s book list curator, bookseller, and teacher. Deidra holds a master of fine arts in Creative Writing from Hamline University and lives in Minneapolis, MN.
