“A IS FOR AGING”
At our April Salon, Lindsey McDivitt will present on age and ageism, a topic that is largely left out of recent discussions of diversity in books for kids. It’s important to avoid defaulting to the myths and negative age stereotypes so common in all media, including picture books. They actually affect how we age and today’s kids will live far more of their long lives as adults and older adults. Bring your questions!

Lindsey McDivitt began writing children’s books after many years in health education. Her picture book Nature’s Friend: The Gwen Frostic Story was published by Sleeping Bear Press (2018). Two additional picture book bios come out in 2019-20. All three feature individuals making a difference in their later life stages. Lindsey feels strongly that we need to show kids older role models and positive images of aging. She reviews picture books with accurate images of aging on her blog www.a-is-for-aging.com.

Our April Salon will be guest hosted by Trisha Speed Shaskan and Nina Victor Crittenden.
The Picture Book Salon meets on the first Monday of each month, in the large classroom on the –>second floor<– of Open Book (room 203), 7-8:30pm. Suggested donation $5 helps cover snacks, drinks, supplies, and promotion.

SAVE THE DATE: Our next Salon will take place May 6.
